Every step of the secondary oil refinement process involves the employment of catalysts. The only oil company in the CIS, Turkistan Oil Refinery, produces catalytic cracking catalysts in-house in a facility with a 3,000-ton annual production capacity. The refinery needs more than this, which is insufficient. The majority of other oil refineries in Kazakhstan also import hydro-process catalysts (hydrocracking and hydrotreating).
